SHINE IS A STORY OF A BUSINESS THAT GIVES BACK
A business that raises aspirations and creates real opportunities.
Shine, a modern, bright and inspirational meeting space, housing 16 offices, 16 conference and meeting rooms for up to 200 people, catering, a café, art gallery, and the newly developed external catering services. As part of their “Eat Good, Do Good” initiative the team delivers beautifully presented, healthful, high quality food, to a variety of high profile clients around Leeds.
“I’ve been going to conferences for 17 years and this is definitely one of the best venues.”
—Business Leader at Aviva.
It all started in 2006 when Dawn O’Keefe, Todd Hannula and their co-founders had a bright idea. They wanted to create a social enterprise in one of the UK’s most deprived neighbourhoods of Harehills. The team raised £4.5 million in public and private monies to purchase and renovate the grade-II listed, 40,000 sq ft iconic but sadly derelict Victorian old school building in the heart of Harehills, Leeds.
This year Shine celebrates 10 years in business. Shine has been recognised for its Social Impact model; in 2011 Dawn O’Keefe was awarded “Yorkshire Business Woman of the Year” and in 2016 was a regional finalist in the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.
While Shine is now a popular destination for small and large businesses alike, it is a commercial business on a mission to raise aspirations and create real opportunities for local children, the local community, women with convictions, and entrepreneurs from the Leeds City Region.
“I have made a success of my life after serving a prison sentence. This is a result of the opportunities provided to me at Shine. I’m now living a regular life, supporting my children through stable employment and giving back to society.”
—person with previous convictions, employed at Shine.
