It’s a funny thing when you start to look at how to portray yourself to people you aren’t directly speaking to.
I remember having some psychometric tests years ago. The words that came out after what seemed like hours of different tests were: Optimistic, Analytical, Good Communicator, Dedicated. I’m happy with that, I’m sure the test only told me the good parts!
To start with, where am I from? Well my parents were in the Army so I can’t really say where I am from. I used to have to put BFPO as my place of birth on application forms. This means ‘British Forces Post Office’. I was actually born in Europe in an Army hospital which is classed as British soil. However you know what admissions offices etc can be like. If it’s not a UK town or city it didn’t make sense in the system so I had to explain every time until I was told “Just put BFPO”.
I have lived all over the UK and in a few countries abroad such as Germany and Cyprus. Many people think it’s a strange thing to move from place to place every 2-3 years but to me I always thought it was great. I had the chance to meet new people and make new friends. Explore new places and find new and exciting things to do.
I guess that is why I love what I do now, I’ve worked in hospitality in a Business Development role of some sort since 2000. What I love is meeting new people seeing how I can help and how we can work together. I believe that networking works and getting to know what people are looking for and providing them with that is always going to be a win-win. I also love working with a team of great people who are working towards the same goal.
My husband always says: “Its not what you know that matters. It’s what you know about who you know!” Always makes me laugh but in a way it’s true. I like to know as much about what my clients and partners want and need so that I can provide them with exactly that. Alternatively a version that hopefully exceeds their expectations! By doing that they are always going to be happy.
At university I studied Graphics and Advertising so when I came out of university my husband asked me “What do you want to do?” I said “I don’t know, but I know I don’t want to do Sales!!!!” and low and behold that is what I’ve been doing since then and I absolutely love it! Especially when I combine my love of design in the marketing element to my role.
I have what I think is an exciting and fabulous career working in big corporate hotels, independent properties both in the UK and abroad. Dubai was the most exciting place!
I now work with Shine in Leeds, a social enterprise. Which I have to say I knew nothing about Social Enterprises before I met with Dawn O’Keefe the founder and MD of Shine! when I looked into it and spoke with Dawn it was like a light bulb moment.
- Why are more people not doing this?
- How amazing that I can use my experience to work with such a great company that actually Makes a Difference!
- What a great idea to help women with convictions to get back into the work place and make money to be able to get their lives back on track before they are released from prison!
- What an amazing building, conference centre, offices, outside catering offering!
My list went on and on!
I feel lucky to be working with the team at Shine as everyone is really happy to be working for such a great company. What Shine is about truly resonates throughout the staff.
I guess there’s also a couple of other things to mention.
- I have a motorbike licence – Passed first time! very proud of myself there
- I play the Saxophone. Though not too well there are definitely a few squeeks and honks when I play. Nevertheless I give it a good go!
- I speak some French – enough to get by when there on a holiday
- I love Skiing!
- Cheese is my favourite food! and my biggest weakness.
I guess that’s me.
