I’m Monika and I’ve been a part of the Shine team for around a year now working as the chef. I’m involved in preparing and cooking all of the food that Shine has to offer. Some days it’s for a conference, sometimes it’s an event, or even just the café food.
As well as the in-house cooking, I also get involved in the catering that takes place away from the Shine building. This is becoming a bigger part of the job as we get the word out about our out-of-house catering. It’s an exciting time!
So who am I?
In three words, I’d say funny, determined and chilled. A good combination, right? But more specifically, the easiest way to start answering is with where I’m from.
I was born in Poland before moving to the UK nine years ago with my parents. I think because I’ve been here so long, my accent is a little bit harder to distinguish now! It’s so nice to have family over here with me. It definitely made the move less daunting than it might have been without them. I’m so used to being in England that I don’t really miss Poland. I think of Leeds as my home now. It’s where I’ve lived and worked for nearly a decade!
There are a couple of things I miss though that the UK doesn’t have. The rest of my family, obviously, who haven’t decided to move here too, but also the food.
As a chef, it’s hard to think of a ‘favourite’ meal because you get to try so many. But my nan’s apple pie or my mum’s Pierogi (Polish dumplings) are ones the UK can’t live up to!
I’ve been in the catering and cooking world for a while now and really enjoy it. I actually heard about Shine through my previous employer. My boss suggested that I have a look at Shine and their catering services. It seemed a good way to fill in the hours I wasn’t working for them. From there, I started working part-time when I could and when I was needed.
Everything about Shine makes it a really enjoyable place to be. The atmosphere is always great and the people are incredibly friendly. All together there’s just a really nice vibe to come to work in. When I left my previous job, I was contacted by the head chef at Shine who then offered me a full-time job. I immediately grabbed the chance while I could and I’ve been here ever since!
Aside from that, Jennifer Aniston is a celebrity guilty pleasure of mine. She’s a brilliant actress and she still looks amazing at the age of 47 – will she ever age?!
So, that’s me, Monika.
