Being a Social Enterprise means that we invest our profits into some fantastic projects that make a positive impact in people’s lives.
A Garden for the Community
SHINE uses its outdoor space to provide an educational resource for the local Harehills community. Gardening workshops are held where people from the community can learn new skills, construct and plant edible produce in their gardens, and take home supplies and food that they have helped grow. The community garden is currently being expanded to provide an educational resource for the local primary school children.
Helping People Get Back On Track
At SHINE we believe everyone deserves a chance. We actively recruit, train and employ people with previous convictions. Working closely with HMP Askham Grange, we provide employment opportunities for women currently in prison through a day-release program. If all goes well, they have a job at SHINE when they are released. This allows many single mums to save money for critical items, such as a deposit on housing, enabling them to secure accommodation and look after their kids when they are released.
70% of people with previous convictions employed full-time, never go on to re-offend, 6 out of 10 employers automatically exclude those with a criminal record, 17,000 children are separated from their mothers each year due to prison sentences
“I have made a success of my life after serving a sentence. I enjoy my job and really do not know where I would be without the support I have from Shine”
Working in Partnership
At SHINE we believe in working collaboratively to support the local community. Our partnerships include working with; the local kids Charity CATCH, local primary schools, NHS, Leeds City Council and 3rd Sector organisations to tackle local issues such as environment, health and education. As a proud Ambassador for Child Friendly Leeds, and a partner in Team Harehills and Keep Harehills Tidy, we work to support teams to raise aspirations and create opportunities.
