Shine, Leeds

Drenched in light, Shine is a modern premium heritage office space conveniently located on the edge of Leeds city centre with easy access to the motorway and main arteries to the north and east.

About the building

The building was built in 1898 and originally used as the Gipton Board School. It was various schools throughout the 20th century, closing for good in 1989. The current owners raised £5m to renovate and modernise the building, opening it again for use in late 2008. It is currently used as a dynamic office and meeting place with fresh food. With views of the city and an imposing property, Shine is a beacon on the edge of Leeds.

“It’s a great venue.”

How we converted Shine

Central to the design are the ideas of Connectivity, Inspiration, and Sustainability.

  • CONNECT: Truly meaningful connectivity is about space which allows various levels of interaction — 1 to 1, 1 to many, and many to many. The building’s design allows for all of these types of interpersonal engagements to happen simultaneously.

  • INSPIRE: The Atrium, the spine of the building, can be used as a dramatic dining space, an inspiring presentation area, trade show, a gathering place outside the office, cafe seating, and/or any number of other uses both temporary and permanent.

  • SUSTAINABLE: The Victorian architects were forward thinking in their design, creating a building with natural air flow, plenty of natural light —even on the cloudiest of days, and a building that regulates its temperature in the warmest days of summer. Shine’s current energy rating moved from an E to C, but it is on a programme to gain B rating efficiency by 2025 with small changes to its energy usage. As an example, all the lights were switched to high efficiency LEDs and the energy supply was 100% renewables beginning 2022.

“The room(s) and the entire building ARE spotless and really well appointed.”
